Something I thought of while reading this, is that it is possible for
multiple drives to fail in the same way.

I've got three Acorn A3020s at work, one of which I was only given a
couple of weeks ago. They all have Conner 60MB hard drives, which have
failed identically, giving the same errors and making the same
clicking noises.

I'm sure I used one of them a while ago, and the most recent one has
been in storage for some time. I think something has failed due to age
rather than use.
