ISTR a piece of software called Claire's (or was it Clare's)  
"Replica", which was expressly designed for this purpose. It made a  
"tape image" onto a floppy, and the way it worked was you'd boot  
Replica off a disk, point it at the clone of your tape, and the game  
would load as if from a normal tape, only much faster.

It dealt with such factors as the filename length issue. (Tapes can  
have longer filenames than DFS disks.)
