Subject: Dead BBC B

Hi.

It's explained best on Sprow's webpage:

http://www.sprow.co.uk/bbc/howto.htm#powersupply

The exploding is probably #3, as the X2s dry out over the years and the
cases split and explode and go open circuit. Those 2 caps are available
from RS, part numbers 210-500 and 311-1024 (50p each) - best to replace both,
even if it's only one that's gone. Also, while you have it out, best to replace
the startup cap, as mentioned in #1.

That's all providing you're handy with a soldering iron, and feel like pulling
your beeb to bits. If so, I can supply those 3 parts at cost if you don't
feel like ordering the minimum qty's from RS. If not, I can do a refurb on
your PSU for you, mail me direct if you prefer to go that way.

Also remember, this is all just a "best guess", going by your description.
It's the most likely thing to have happened, but without actually looking
at the machine itself, it's impossible to say for sure that this is the fault.

Thanks, Mark.

  <<Probably just the X2s expiring.

<<?1 and you'd be back in business.

  <<Mark.

Can you explain this in "novice" language please??..what would i need to
try fix this.
The BBC was running at the time when i heard a clicking noise from the
machine and thick black smoke poured out of the box. I presumed it was a
lost cause as i have no real 8bit skills, only recently returning to it after
a 25year break.
