I think that as long as nothing external tinkers with things at
startup, it shouldn't get to the point where it tries to do the jump.
Certainly I never noticed anything untoward happening (on a B) when I
built a similar box all those years ago..

I wish I could remember what happened to it - it's not surfaced in any
of my meanderings since then...  It was a masterpiece of veroboard,
wire-wrap and stray capacitance ..
