For what it's worth, you can still buy PCB-mounted nicad/nimh cells
easily enough.  Farnell sell one that will (with a little bit of
pin-bending) drop into the holes on the A5000 board, and I imagine it
would be possible to find an even closer equivalent with a bit more
searching.  I think the A3000 battery is similar/identical to the one in
the A5000.
