Must admit, that's all I've ever done.

I spent an age once, transferring one particular tape to MPEG on the
computer.. The tape was about 20yo, and the player only barely newer,
and the heads would constantly fill up with crap and picture would
vanish on me.  cotton buds and some neat gin sorted them out each
time..   (I was transferring it so i didn't ever have to try and play
it again!)

However, I did find a bit of plain A4 used to work wonders cleaning
edge connectors on games catridges, floppy drives, and the like ...
