In theory, yes. The two XP machines couldn't see each other by computer 
name, which is why I did the hosts file thing (couldn't be bothered 
investigating, I wanted connectivity then and there...).
That said, all the TCP/IP stuff works right away while browsing shares 
seems slower to find computers, never mind their shares, so that might 
use the SMB name?

The thing I like about the DNS name is its universality. Can I make an 
http request to an SMB name? I can make a net request to an IP address...
