Unsurprisingly that is exactly what I find.

I can ping by IP address.

I have put a sarah entry in the Host section of the configuration file and
can *ping sarah

If I uses the FQDN (i.e.*ping sarah.chriswhy.local) it is resolved by DNS
and ping works

Definitely true! "Host not known"
So I now understand and have corrected my ping problems. And, of course, I
can ping the Master by IP address, and once I have added
Master1.chriswhy.local to DNS, I can ping the Master by name. Would be nice
to be able to assign the Master a proper host name not just default em0.

The name of the computer that I am trying to connect to is "sarah" in
NetBIOS, the NetBIOS domain is CHRISWHY and its IP address is 192.168.100.55
Now that I have the line "192.168.100.55 sarah" in the static Hosts list,
(a) should be recognised but gives "host not known" and does the same with
either chriswhy or chriswhy.local as the workgroup at the end of the
command.
so should:
(d) *mount \\192.168.100.55\Public user pword but it also gives "Host not
known".

If there is anything I can do to help please ask here or privately.
