The unit name, em0, isn't really used for anything.

You can change the host name (which is declared to the DHCP server when the
address is dished out) by overriding the default one - details in the FAQ
  http://www.sprow.co.uk/bbc/masternet.htm#FAQs
you don't need to be logged on to set this.

That last one should work, provided the reverse lookup is happening, which
it sounds like it isn't. 

Let me see if I can get the Win2k machine at work added to the domain and
mess about for a bit there, if we need to do some off-list packet sniffing
