Okay, he has. I know. I just wrote to somebody who pointed this out that 
there's yet another flaw in Thunderbird. When you click that button to 
show you the next unread message, it does. But it doesn't show you the 
message you SHOULD read next. Or trap your reply and say "oi, numbnuts, 
didn't you see that other subject (or not - no, you'll get to that in 
eight more clicks) and THEN you'll feel like a lemon... or maybe a 
kumquat...". :-)
