Wouldn't have thought the cable was long enough. I used to hold the
drive in one hand at the back of the (open) machine, right in the EMI
field of the monitor, while inserting disc with other hand. Symptom was
failure to boot - sometimes a few horizontal lines appeared then the
screen blanked and the machine beeped pathetically. If I put the cage
over the drive to shield it and held it in the exact same position the
box would boot perfectly. Had this on several 8 series and 9 series.

You did, didn't you? :o)
If you ever drop a screw or other small component, _watch where it
falls_ then you know where it is. Otherwise you can spend hours hunting
and swearing.
Clever me LARTed myself last week. Working on a laptop with failed hard
drive, removed caddy and undid screws fixing drive in caddy. No room on
desk, full of junk, so working on the bed. Took drive details down then
realised I was late for work and dashed off. On return home made the
bed (shaking the duvet out and turning it over) then wondered where the
screws were...
Found 3 almost straightaway but the 4th eluded me. (They're special
very-flat-headed screws, normal ones would stick out too much and
prevent the drive caddy from fitting into its bay.)
Found it yesterday in Teddy's lap. Teddy sits in a chair next to the
bed. Good old Teddy. :o)
