Only once, but fortunately I had a load of untested spare drives I
bought in a boxful on PCW bits from an auction (looked like a shop
clearout).

Doesn't always work - I've found they can bounce off hard floors so
fast you can't see where they've gone, sometimes I've found the screw
a ridiculous distance away.

I've got a Sony HitBit at work that I took the three case screws out
of from underneath, as I plan to strip it and clean it up (it's
working but filthy). I put the screws on top of the machine. *Three
times* now I've absent-mindedly picked the machine up to look at it,
dropping the screws. I now only have two, but fortunately they'll be
easy to replace.
