though the ones I saw (years ago) were cream, not black, and the chips
were aligned vertically. They were taller to allow the bottom of the
socket to clear the Master's case. Made by Vine Micros or Care
Electronics IIRC.
You might /just/ get a ZIF and ROM in this if you desoldered the IC
socket and soldered the ZIF directly:

No, but there are a few different types of ZIF socket. There's a low-
profile one which uses a screw turned with a screwdriver to lock the
chip. It's a lot smaller and neater than the huge green things with the
lever you usually see.
