I imagine that it must be a real PITA to see those on a Beeb, or via Arcade.

Damn right.
Mom doesn't always stick to it, but my rules are very simple:
1. Number withheld, I only answer *if* I can be bothered.
[exception for "International" as BT seems quite inconsistent
as to whether or not a number is passed on]
2. Somebody called, left NO message.
I can get the number via web interface. If it is a number I
recognise then I *might* call them back (some of the local Brits
are so inept they hang up because "it started speaking to me
in French"!). If it is a number I don't recognise, I just ^X
the entry. Somebody that can't be bothered to leave a message
is not somebody I will worry about...
...turns out I did this to three calls from my work head office
for a change of hours on a Friday. When I turned up at my normal
time (i.e. late) I said "oh, you're the xxxxx number", yes why?,
"it wouldn't kill them to have left a message", but, "no, no
buts". I now mostly remember the head office number, and I'd
still ^X it. You see, I'm paying this message a LOT more attention
than I'd offer to somebody who doesn't leave their number and/or
doesn't leave a message. No, I do *NOT* phone back (even if it is
free).
Best wishes,
Rick.
