I'd strongly recommend Sprow's and Wouter's troubleshooting guides:

It sounds like you've got the nothing's-been-initialised problem, so you
may find yourself swapping lots of chips before you find the fault.
It's probably worth asking around for local BBC fans to see if you can
pick up a couple of spare machines...
