'cos it costs a shedload of resources to keep analogue running, not to
mention complication of digital and analogue in the same frequency band
(in some places, Channel5 was allocated the same frequency as most
people's VCRs (which seemed monumentally stupid) because there wasn't
anywhere else to put it that it wouldn't interfere with everything else)
plus you can get a number of digital channels in the place of one
analogue (skip arguments about picture quality, the bean counters like
more channels as it could mean more kerching).
Digital *could* be good. But it is held back by greedy commercial
interests. But on the other hand, if it was up to Auntie alone, we'd
probably still have black and white with presenters who know how to
speak the country's language *correctly*. ;-)
On the other hand, digital is more prone to weather (no fuzzy fade away,
once it overwhelms the error correction mechanism, it's just junk data)
and I can't speak for terrestrial, but my British TV on satellite hosts
a shocking number of repeats of everything *except* the one programme I
actually bother to watch.
It's Saturday. Remember when there used to be quality films? Remember
when you used to get stuff like Airwolf and that bloke on a motorbike
(post-Knightrider) to balance the football/snooker on Beeb1?
Well, I looked at the TVGuide app on my phone and the only thing
possibly worthy of a watch is "The Specialist", but I've already seen
it, like, a dozen times... So I might dig out that "Eden Log" DVD I
picked up for a ?0,50... or maybe just pick random anim? off Veoh.
<clicky><clicky> Hmmm, it's mostly icky-hentai (my little sister is SO
sexy) or stupid humanoid mecha beating the crap out of each other. I
could say human shaped robots are the stupidest shape imaginable, but
then since they're floating about fifty metres off the ground, I don't
think the basic laws of physics apply... Ah, Eve no Jikan. There's a
(very short) series *everybody* should watch. Maybe I'll rewatch that.
And broadcast TV? Doesn't get a look in tonight...
You *know* telly has gone downhill when there's twenty-odd channels
waiting for you (not including +1s) and you think spending an afternoon
mowing stuff or playing Hanafuda with yourself is a more interesting
proposition.
Still, can't complain tooooo much. I watch Horror Channel and enjoyed
the short time of AnimeCentral. Neither of those would have been
possible without digital.
Best wishes,
Rick.
