It can't be entirely down to the drive as HADFS v 5.50 does far better 
in my speed test. The hard disc is old though so a good part of the slow 
speed could be down tothat.

Aha! So with me loading 16k, that would be (16384bytes*12) / 1,000,000 = 
0.19 secs. The ST506 takes 20cs to load that much. About right.
