Yes, MODE 8 *is* a four-colour MODE 0 - or 80-column MODE 1,
whatever you want to think of it. It's 80 column text in four
colours - that's what was asked for, and that's what MODE 8 is.
I know I am completely and utterly useless at creating imaginative
examples, so I've spent some time rewriting ModeDemo and the index
page to try and put something better together.
Yes, you create a MODE 8 by starting with MODE 1, not MODE 0,
because it's easier to start with the system set up for the correct
number of colours and then change the character structure, then it
is to start with the correct number of characters and change the
colour structure.
Similarly, MODE 9 starts with MODE 2 because MODE 2 has the
requesite 16 colours which you can then change the character layout
to get the right number of text columns.
