Yes, choosing RGB+flash prevents you from doing RGB+bright, but 
RGB+bright doesn't stop you from doing RGB+flash. Instead of the MOS 
toggling the "flash" bit in the Video ULA on the video timer, write the 
palette entries on the timer. The added advantage is that lets you flash 
between arbitary colours. I vaguely remember a magazine type-in that did 
this.
