There is an RS232 to Midi interface circuit in a past elektor electronics
magazine, I could dig the information up if you want. You'll have to program
the serial chip directly for the correct midi board rate 11500baud. As far
as playing midi tune is concerned you have to write some sort of (general
midi) interpreter and have a saved sample bank. This could take up a lot of
space. I have a BBC micro user article which has some processing code which
will allow you to crudely play 8bit sample on the bbc speaker if this is of
any help. I also have a sample bank from a util called GMplay but I think
the humble bbc might not be up to multiplexing channels of sound for
playback.
I think the music 500 could be used for an intermediate solution. There's
also a yamahaa board which you can hook up to a serial port and get it to
output midi, I have to dig these details out though.

Subject: [BBC-Micro] BBC MIDI Input??
Hi all,
Just a quick question: Is there any device than enables a BBC to receive
MIDI data, and play it out via it's sound chip and internal speaker? Bit
of a strange thing to want to do, perhaps, but I really do want to know
:-)
TIA
Tim.
