A few ppl discussed OCR software here.

I have very good experiences with Adobe Acrobat. Text recognition is up to
par with the best OCR tools (Omnipage, for example) and checking and
correcting text is much easier. Plus, Acrobat allows you to maintain the
original page layout.

Acrobat costs money (only the reader is free), but of course, a little
creativity can make it a lot cheaper...

About the cutting of magazines: yes, it's sacrilege, but it is the best way
to scan them properly.
