Actually, the test program hung the machine. I had the analyser out because
it looked like the IDE commands weren't reaching the drive. I did find out
that writes were working, though...
And I've got the motherboard out too - I've been meaning to fit a new locking
clip to the disc drive connector for ages. More excuses to clean out the muck
and fix the few remaining faults...

I'm going to see about swapping out that capacitor now (with a minor board
mod to take the new part). It looks like that's all it needs...
