As a follow-up, I located the 8277 chip but it seems to be firmly soldered
in place (at least I can't budge it).
There seems to be no 6850, 7002 or 6522 on my model and, as there is no
Econet, no 8277 either.
I do notice that the caps lock light comes on ok but the shift lock lights
(dimly) for a split second on switch-on and the cassette motor light does
the same on switch-off. There is also a slight "click" from somewhere (near
the rear) when I switch off - I hadn't noticed that before. The insides are
as clean as a whistle.
The keyboard connector also looks in good shape and clean at both ends (I
disconnected that and it still gave the same sound). I also note that the
volume of the sound changes from loud to soft as I switch the Beeb on and
off (ie switch on, loud, switch off. Switch on again, soft. Switch off and
so on).
