It's a problem with NetFS 5.78. You need NetUtils. "The NetUtils
module ensures the correct behaviour of NetFS on extending files.
Failure to use the NetUtils module may result in the loss of data.
Note that it *is* still required with RISC OS 3.11".
There's a copy in my minimal boot systems at
http://mdfs.net/System/Apps/
It needs to be run as a task on boot. Putting it (or a link to it)
in Boot:Choices:Boot.Tasks would do it.

I had a look at that when I first found it and dropped it
immediately. I archive my MDFS with BBCZip:
*Zip -adfs-$.Apps/zip -net-:Apps.$ -p Apps -r -X
though it doesn't span across disks at the moment.

My GoMMC Master has a Z80 CoPro plugged in externally and an ARM
CoPro internally. I need to get around to deciding whether to swap
the Z80 for a 6502 and play around with L3FS.

Just enter the drive size manually.

I've used SoftMDFS which is a modification of awServer to add MDFS
functions. I've never noticed any problems, though I've never used
it with raFS holding the exported data. I have had the exported
data in ZIP files, and that worked fine.
