:-) Thanks (and to Dave) - that's done the trick. Well, almost - my button 
order's still a little funky. Far as I can tell, GEM doesn't discriminate 
between left or right clicks - so right now I've got it responding to clicks 
on buttons 1 & 2 when it should be 1 & 3 (but I still wouldn't know if I had 
left and right swapped, unless I start poking at pins with the multimeter).

I've still got the second Depraz mouse to convert...

Interesting - I've got a Marconi/Acorn trackerball on the shelf; I might 
motivate myself to give that a try and see what's what.
