Bingo! Once I opened the drive, the cable fell out. After attaching
it to the card-edge connector, everything works as it should. I feel
a bit stupid for not checking something trivial like that before
asking for technical advice.

Well, except for the Master 128 has reverted to the old configuration
as it was a few days ago. I take it as a sign I should visit the FAQ
for how to replace the battery pack.
