I've used my iPAQ to play MP3s to a Beeb and also to an Exidy Sorcerer
(both machines at 300 and 1200 baud) without any difficulty.  It
probably depends on the volume and the filtering.  Beebs are pretty good
in that respect.  Even for 1200 baud you don't need a lot of bandwidth
(less than 5Khz even allowing for Nyquist) and a 22kHz sample rate
(which someone mentioned) should be fine.
