After reading and absorbing all that, I am left with the opinion that 
the correct way for clients to handle mailing lists is to use the 
"List-Id" header (as per RFC2919) to implement a "Reply to List Only" 
function.

Sadly, I know of no mail clients that implement such a function - are 
there any?

Surprisingly, the document by Neale Pickett does not make any mention 
of RFC2912. His document is not dated, but we can presume it was 
written after 2001, so RFC2912 will have been published before Pickett 
wrote the document.
