Indeed.

Tell me about it. I'm behind the uni firewall, thankfully, but my desk
machine has a hole poked to allow incoming sshd. I protect this with
iptables so only specified IPs are allowed access, all others being
silently dropped, but it's instructive watching the attempts to access
sshd in the logs. Several hundred a day and 99% of them come from
Chinese IP space.

Of course it does.

We use some of those at the telescope. http://telescope.livjm.ac.uk/
I found they are /very/ susceptible to RFI noise; won't be buying any
more.

'Course not. One word: Linux.

It's just to confuse the great unwashed and lull them into spending more
than they need to.

Athlon 64 X2 5600+, 2Gb, 74Gb Raptor for OS (soon to be replaced with
SSD), 2Tb Hitachi for data, DVDRW. Toying with the idea of getting a
Phenom X4 but managing to resist so far as it'll also mean a new board
and memory. Don't play games.

That must be painful. You should give XPSP3 1Gb. 512Mb is enough to
load the OS but not to run any apps. A newer, faster disk also makes a
surprisingly big difference (real world experience).
